Audiobook: Dunkirk by Hugh Sebag-Montefiore read by Roy McMillan

The Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 is a known important moment within British history and many people are aware of the imagery surrounding this of the small boats coming to rescue soldiers stranded on Dunkirk’s beech. This book contains intricate and precise narratives detailing the escape of the British troops from capture by the German Nazis. We hear some of the individual accounts of their desperate attempts to travel back to England but also their acts of heroism to aid their comrades and allow more to return back to England.

This was a massive audiobook spanning just 21 hours of listening and took me somewhere around three weeks to conquer. I know some people can be put off by an audiobook which can feel too long however for me when it is a history book part of the appeal is the length; size does matter.

I loved the detail and felt that each account from the soldiers was granted enough time to allow the build up of their desperate struggles for survival, hope and care for each other.

A fascinating listen and one which I enjoyed from beginning to end.
